N. Korea eyes strengthening currency order via redenomination
North Korea’s redenomination of its currency, the won, was partly aimed at strengthening currency order in the country, the Choson Sinbo reported Friday, quoting a central bank official. ”This currency exchange is aimed at first raising the value of our currency to smoothen its circulation,” Jo Song Hyon of the Central Bank of Korea was quoted as saying.

North Korea has redenominated its currency, the won, for the first time in 17 years, with the exchange rate between the old and new bills at 100 to 1, diplomatic sources and news reports said Tuesday. The North Korean Foreign Ministry notified foreign diplomats based in Pyongyang of the matter at a meeting Tuesday morning. But the ministry did not explain the reason for the step, the sources said.
